Spanish Fulbright Fellow to Present Research on the Renaissance History of Finance and Moral Economy

The SLU Center for Iberian Historical Studies (CIHS) will host a public lecture featuring Fulbright Fellow María Inocencia Perea Moreno. Moreno will present “The Merits of Christ’ and the Revenues of the Crown: The Crusade Bull in Castille (1455-1525)” at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, in the Pere Marquette Gallery, DuBourg Hall, Room 240.

Lunch will be provided following the lecture. All are welcome to register in advance.

Moreno joined the SLU community at the start of the fall 2025 semester after being awarded a prestigious Fulbright Award meant to foster academic cooperation between the United States and Spain.

Moreno’s research examines the intersection of Medieval forms of taxation and salvation. She came to SLU from the University of Málaga to utilize SLU’s Distinctive Collections, including  the Knights of Columbus Vatican Film Library (VFL). The VFL is home to thousands of rare Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, and Moreno has been able to study diplomatic correspondence between Rome, Spain, and North Africa during the 16th century.

Moreno also came to SLU because of its faculty and research community. SLU offers a unique concentration of expertise in global Iberian studies across both its St. Louis and Madrid campuses, especially by hosting the Center for Iberian Historical Studies (CIHS). The Center builds on the rich Jesuit tradition in Iberian Studies and the broader study of Spanish borderlands in North America.

In the past three years, CIHS has established international partnerships with institutions such as Oxford University in England, Columbia University in New York and Paris, the University of Bologna in Italy, and the Academia Sinica in Taiwan.

The CIHS sponsorship of Moreno is done in partnership with the Center for Renaissance Studies at the Newberry Library in Chicago, where she will pursue further research in the spring using Renaissance manuscripts and printed texts.
