SLU Will Celebrate National First-Generation Celebration Day
SLU will kick off the week leading up to National First-Generation Celebration Day with T-shirts and treats to celebrate all Billiken first-generation college students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the North Lobby of the Busch Student Center.
Other events for the week include a panel to support first-generation college students thinking about graduate school set for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, in BSC room 352/3. First-generation students also will be recognized at the men's basketball game on Nov. 6.
First-generation college students are those for whom neither parent graduated with a four-year degree. National First-Generation Celebration Day was first officially celebrated in 2017 and November 8 was selected as the date to commemorate the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act which created federal programs aimed at helping first-generation and lower income students.
