Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and is widely regarded as the most prestigious honor society in the liberal arts and sciences. Only 10 percent of colleges and universities in the United States have been accorded the privilege of conferring membership in Phi Beta Kappa, and only 20 of the nation’s 230 Catholic colleges and universities hold this distinction. Saint Louis University’s chapter, Gamma of Missouri, was established in 1968.
