Students Visit Jefferson City for Advocacy, Education
Sabrina Tyuse, Ph.D., with the School of Social Work, and Jessica Trout, with the William L. Clay Institute for Civic Engagement and Economic Justice, brought nearly 50 students to Jefferson City on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
The groups advocated for various causes and met with State Representative LaKeySha Bosley, who represents the legislative district where SLU resides.
The groups supported an anti-poverty advocacy nonprofit, Empower Missouri and immigrant rights advocacy with Hispanic Capitol Day. Additional students from SLU rode with the groups and prepared their own advocacy on health care access and community justice through SLU Policy Pods.
During the meeting with Bosley, she reminded students that their voices matter in Jefferson City and they should continue to advocate for what they care about. She shared with them that she was just 25 when she took office, and they should never hold themselves back based on their age.
The next trip to Jefferson City is Child Advocacy Day on Wednesday, March 25. Email Jessica.Trout@slu.edu with questions.
