Jesuit Mission in the Core Classroom: A Conversation Across Disciplines, is part of SLU’s programming for the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education, which brings together educators from across the U.S. to reflect on the connections between their teaching, scholarship, and the Jesuit educational mission.
The event will be from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 in the second floor
of Pius XII Library. A reception with wine and cheese will follow.
What is education for? How do our disciplines serve human flourishing? And how does
Jesuit mission animate the work of teaching and scholarship? When we think of Jesuit
education, we often think of service, spirituality, philosophy, or theology. But what
if Jesuit mission is also present in a chemistry lab, a literature seminar, an accounting
course, or a sociology classroom? What if it is not something added to our courses,
but something already embedded in the deepest aims of our disciplines?
These questions will be at the center of this upcoming panel discussion. Nancy Dallavalle, Ph.D., executive director of the National Seminar and Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University, will gather faculty and leaders across the AJCU network to engage questions that unite AJCU university intellectual life.
"With 'Magnifica Humanitas' Pope Leo XVI has called for a genuine engagement with the intellectual life as a deeply human pursuit, making the inquiry into 'humanitas' — the question that Jesuit education has foregrounded for over 500 years — ever more urgent," Dallavalle said. "As faculty and students grapple with profound questions about the future of human flourishing in a digital age, we hope Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education can bring insights from across our campuses into dialogue that supports our important mission."
This upcoming panel discussion ishosted by the University Core, SLU’s Office of Mission and Identity, and the Herrmann Center for Innovative Catholic Education. The event will be moderated Bryan Sokol, Ph.D., (Psychology) and will invite faculty to explore the human intellectual project as a shared search for truth in service of human flourishing.
The panel will feature two SLU faculty members, Karen Hall, Ph.D., (Educational Leadership, School of Education) and Michael Hankins, Ph.D., (Chemistry, School of Science and Engineering) in conversation with two members of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education, Catherine Punsalan-Manlimos , Ph.D. (Vice President for Mission Integration at Seattle University) and Fr. James Miracky (Vice President for Mission Integration and Ministry, St. Peter’s University).
This panel discussion and the workshop series to follow will offer SLU instructors time to reflect together on how the Jesuit mission animates the questions asked.
