SLU Approves New Speech and Expression Policy

11/20/2018

Following a discussion and review process involving students, faculty and staff over a period of nearly 18 months, Saint Louis University has reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of expression, consistent with its Catholic Jesuit heritage and mission as a research university. SLU has approved a new Statement of Philosophy and Policy on Speech, Expression and Civil Discourse that is now in place.

“The fundamental purpose of a community of scholars and learners is to engage respectfully rather than repress, and through critical, yet civil engagement, the truth emerges,” University President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D., said.

The new policy institutes an approval process for speakers and performers that are public to the campus community. This approval process is not required for speakers invited to address a class as a part of the curriculum; to convocations such as commencement; or to speakers and performers in designated University venues when such venues have been rented to unaffiliated organizations.

To receive approval, sponsors of events follow a simple process that includes a brief explanation of the event, plans for organizing and conducting the event, and plans for dealing with any controversy or concerns associated with the event.

In the unusual case that an application is rejected due to imminent threat to safety, the policy provides for an appeal process where the sponsor can seek a review of the decision concerning the event.

The text of the new policy may be read in its entirety here, along with information on practical procedures, the supporting philosophy that grounds this policy in the Ignatian guidelines for civil discourse, and answers to a list of frequently asked questions. Visitors to this page will also be able to review a list of currently approved speakers.

The policy’s ultimate goal is to create an environment for learning that embraces diverse opinions across political and ideological spectrums and encourages a respectful exchange of ideas, while assuring that other legitimate concerns of the institution, including reverence toward diversity, safety of its community and security of the campus environment, are met. Members of the SLU community are encouraged to read through the policy and reflect upon its supporting philosophy statement.

Jackie Weber, interim director of student Involvement, and Kent Porterfield, Ed.D., vice president for student development, are campus resources for queries related to approval procedures or upcoming events featuring an approved speaker.
