Declutter Your Life at Annual E-Waste/Shredmania Recycling Drive

Saint Louis University will hold its annual E-Waste and ShredMania event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, on the Fred Weber parking lot adjacent to Chaifetz Arena. The event is open to the St. Louis community as well as SLU faculty, staff and students.

The drive is sponsored by SLU’s Facilities Services Division in partnership with the Midwest Recycling Center (MRC) and Cintas Document Management. The event is part of the University’s SLUstainability program in conjunction with the 2019 Recyclemania competition (an intercollegiate recycling competition between regional and national colleges and universities).

Help SLU meet its goal to take first place in the electronic competition of Recyclemania by participating or sharing this information with others.

Paper items are free however some E-Waste items may be subject to a fee. Additional information is included in the E-Waste section.

ShredMania

Spring is a great time to clean out your files. Don’t forget about dead storage files located in Earhart Hall. Contact Distribution Services for information about how to sort through your files or find out what files your department has in storage Schedule a time to review your boxes in Earhart before the March 28 event.

Shredding files are free for this event, but there will be a cost to departments to destroy files after the drive.Requests for files to be picked up from your office must be made by Monday, March 25.

Bring any type of paper to be shredded. Documents will be destroyed on-site with a mobile shredding vehicle. Secure shredding provides an opportunity to properly dispose of confidential documentation that fulfills federal, state and other legal requirements of disposal. This method of disposal is a safe and secure way to prevent valuable information from getting into the wrong hands. Iin addition, shredding assists in the recycling process and creates a new source of paper which helps the environment by preventing the cutting of additional trees.

Items recommended for shredding include: invoices, bank statements, canceled checks, profit and loss statements, leases, capital stock ledgers, patent and related data, computer printouts, market research studies, customer lists, sales figures, sealed bids, strategies, balance sheets, reconciliations, audit reports, monthly trial balances, claims and litigation records, timecards, new product designs, credit reports and applications, marketing/advertising plans, medical records, micro media, draft copies of letters, drug screens, cash books, financial statements, correspondence, tax returns, trademark information, complaints, blueprints, inaccurate sales literature, contracts, R & D information, personnel records, memos and legal briefs, technical data, insurance records, sign in/registration forms 

NOTE: Staples, rubber bands, folders, paper clips, etc. do not need to be removed before shredding occurs.

E-Waste

Click here for a MRC list of items that will be accepted free at the SLU recycling event. Please take note of the disposal fees that apply to televisions, items containing Freon and computer monitors. 

NOTE: There are also items that aren’t accepted at recycling events but can be dropped off at an MRC facility. These include alkaline batteries, magnetic media (VHS tapes, cassette tapes, floppy disks) and optical discs (CDs/DVDs).

Your office can collect items and place a service request through the Facilities Services Request System. Requests must be made by 5 p.m. Monday, March 25. 

New This Year

SLU property that contains data (computers, tablets, etc.) cannot be recycled at this event and must go to IT. However, computer accessories (monitors, keyboards, etc.) are still accepted

All Saint Louis University-owned property is free of charge, however any personal items may be subject to a fee.

Drug Disposal

Saint Louis University’s Department of Public Safety will be on hand to collect unwanted, expired and/or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. This event is for patients and their families to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Acceptable items include:
