You're Invited! Congratulations on your invitation to interview for Saint Louis University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. You'll use the platform StandOut to record and submit your interview, and you must attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day.

Scholarship recipients will be announced in April. Watch for a decision notification email.

Important Dates

  • Feb. 14: Receive invitation to create StandOut account
  • Feb. 28: Deadline to create StandOut account and register for Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day
  • March 6: Deadline to complete and submit interview
Virtual Interview

You'll use StandOut to record and submit your answers to pre-recorded questions. Watch for a StandOut email the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 14 inviting you to create your account, which you must do by Friday, Feb. 28. Complete and submit your interview any time between Feb. 14 and March 6.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day

This day-long, in-person visit on Friday, March 21 will give you a comprehensive look at SLU academics and resources. You must register by Friday, Feb. 28.

If you cannot attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day, you must attend one of the following admitted student visit programs: You at SLU Day, Admitted Student Day, or Billiken for a Day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit: What To Expect

Your day begins with a 9:15 a.m. check-in and concludes with the 6 p.m. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Welcome Reception, during which light hors d'oeuvres will be served. If you're looking for dinner options after the event, consider these Billiken-approved favorites:

Rules and Regulations

To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must create their StandOut account and register for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day by Friday, Feb. 28. They must complete and submit their interview by Thursday, March 6. If they cannot attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Visit Day, they must attend one of the admitted student visit programs listed above.

Family Attendance

Up to two guests are permitted. Parents/guardians and family members are welcome to attend the campus visit program, but their attendance is not required.

Itinerary/Additional Requests

We hope these activities provide a first-rate introduction to life at SLU. Because the itinerary is highly customized to each candidate’s individual needs, we cannot schedule additional appointments during your visit. Please be assured you will have ample time to speak with representatives from many University offices and academic departments.

What To Expect

Your interview questions are prepared by current Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars. You'll have one or more practice sessions and then formally record your answers to the questions.

Martin Luther King Jr. Visit Day gives you the chance to experience life as a Billiken. You'll meet other students interviewing for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship and can talk with current scholars and SLU faculty.

All interviews will be reviewed by a group of SLU's current scholars, alumni, and faculty. Decisions will be released in April.

How To Use StandOut

You'll receive a StandOut email the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 14 inviting you to create your StandOut account, which you must do by Friday, Feb. 28. Log in to watch instructions on how to practice and submit your answers to pre-recorded interview questions.

Practice
  • Record and review practice responses starting Friday, Feb. 14.
  • Practice at least once; all practice recordings will disappear once you submit your official interview responses.
  • Plan on two- to three-minute answers for each question.
Submit
  • Once you start recording your actual interview responses, you cannot stop.
  • Record and submit your official interview any time between Feb. 14 and March 6.
How To Prepare

To create an optimal interview environment, consider the following tips:

  • Choose a quiet space with good lighting and a plain background.
  • Make sure your computer is fully charged or plugged in.
  • Use Chrome as your browser, if possible.
How To Personalize Answers

Be prepared to tell stories about your life, leadership experience, and passion for social justice. Your interview will be reviewed by current scholars, alumni, and faculty—they want to get to know you and what you can offer the SLU community. SLU's Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars have different backgrounds and personalities. Be yourself and have fun!

Where To Park

SLU is located in the heart of St. Louis and is easily accessible by air, car, and train. If you are driving to SLU, visitor parking is available at Laclede Parking Garage, located at 3642 Laclede Ave., St. Louis, MO 63103, at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Laclede Avenue.
