JED Strategic Plan

Guiding Principles for Implementation

  • Implement campuswide educational campaigns that promote shared responsibility for student Image of JED strategy steps, including promote social connectedness, identify students at risk, increase help-seeking behavior, provide mental health and substance abuse services, following crisis management procedures, restrict access to potentially lethal means, develop life skills.   • Ensure the JED Campus team has representation from diverse stakeholders across campus 
  • Ensure the campus community is aware of the JED Campus strategic plan and the work of the task force 
  • Utilize a lens of equitable implementation to consider students from marginalized populations who may be at increased risk
  • Share/utilize data analysis to inform current and future mental health and substance use initiatives
  • Align the JED Campus initiative with the Provosts’ Strategic Plan and the Student Well-Being Task Force's recommended actions

Our Strategic Priorities

SLU has established the following working groups to accomplish the action steps outlined in our strategic plan. The working groups include members of the JED Task Force who represent the SLU campus. In addition, the working groups will reach out to relevant offices and departments to collaborate and align with current efforts already underway. We hope to elevate and create energy around our shared mission for a healthy campus environment.

Substance Use
  • Educate families of incoming students regarding mental health and substance use resources and services on campus: In progress
  • Implement standardized screenings for substance use/misuse and common mental health problems by health service clinicians at primary care visits: In progress
  • Develop/refine a policy on alcohol and other drugs that is consistent with JED Campus recommendations: In progress
  • Publish all alcohol and other drug policies: In progress
  • Establish or expand recovery community and/or support programs on campus: In progress
  • Avail emergency Naloxone to first responders and doses to those at risk for overdose (as permitted by local law): In progress

Student Belonging
  • Offer or enhance programs, activities, and campaigns that promote connections to community-based, cultural, religious or national groups: In progress

Screening

Risk and Response

  • Promote information about how to report/get help for an emergency both during daytime and after hours, including a 24/7 crisis phone line (and/or chat line) through campus resources or local/national services: Completed

Policy Team
  • Require health insurance for all full-time students and ensure the policy has coverage for mental health, substance misuse, and cessation services: Completed

Life Skills and Health Promotion
  • Offer or enhance programming and/or services targeting academic and life skills in the following areas: study skills, test anxiety, stress management, communication skills, identifying/regulating emotions, time management, career readiness, transition into college, transition out of college, and tutoring: In progress
  • Offer or enhance comprehensive programming on the effects of lifestyle choices on wellness (e.g. adequate sleep, exercise, nutrition, etc.): In progress

Health/Mental Health Access
