The Research Institute Annual Impact Report is published annually in autumn for Saint Louis University, its alumni, friends and benefactors.
The Impact Report shares the story of SLU's rise as a preeminent research university since the establishment of the SLU Research Institute in 2018. It contains messages from University President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D., and SLU Research Institute Director Ken Olliff, annual data on research growth at the University, interviews with SLU researchers, and updates on research projects supported by the Research Institute.
The inaugural issue of the Annual Impact Report covers the first two years of the SLU Research Institute. The issue introduces a number of new initiatives launched with support from the Research Institute and highlights the various mechanisms for support that the Research Institute manages, including the Big Ideas competition, the Research Growth Fund and the Research Institute Fellows program. The issue also sheds light on how SLU researchers persevered through the historic challenges of 2020, guiding their existing research programs through unprecedented challenges while making meaningful contributions in the fight against COVID-19.
Highlights from the 2020 issue include:Overcoming an Outbreak How researchers at Saint Louis University are mobilizing against the COVID-19 pandemic, including the race for a vaccine, bold steps from SLU's Big Ideas, and updates from projects supported by the Research Institute's Rapid Response COVID-19 Seed Fund. Innovation Begins with Ideation Comprehensive reports from all of the Big Ideas, including conversations with the directors of four new institutes that have launched since 2018 with support from the SLU Research Institute. On the Front Lines Updates from the Center for Vaccine Development on its crucial work testing vaccines and treatments for COVID-19, while continuing work on other vital projects such as a universal flu vaccine. A conversation with Daniel Hoft, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Vaccine Development, is also included. Windows of Opportunity Updates from recipients of the Research Growth Fund, which was established shortly after the SLU Research Institute as a flexible source of funding for researchers to advance their research ambitions. Deep dives on four projects demonstrate how the Research Growth Fund is enabling transformative research in areas as far afield as the digital humanities, chemistry, health disparities, biology and more. Collective Strength Introducing the inaugural class of Research Institute Fellows.
