About Us

Your first SLU experience as a student is the SLU 101 orientation program that will assist you and your family in your transition to college. Preparing for your first semester is exciting and can also be a little nerve-wracking. We are here for you in the transition and excited to welcome you to the Billiken family!

SLU 101 is specifically designed to support and equip new students with the knowledge and tools they need to achieve success at SLU and in their educational career. SLU 101 is also designed to support students’ parents, guardians and families in gaining the information they need to help coach and empower their student in their development as an adult learner.

SLU 101 Goals and Outcomes

The SLU 101 program is designed to meet the following student learning outcomes framed by the University-wide undergraduate learning outcomes and the University mission.

Goals of the SLU 101 Program

SLU 101 will …

  • Acquaint students with the University mission, Jesuit Catholic values and the University’s commitment to service and social justice that support individual growth and development.
  • Provide shared experiences for students that promote their sense of belonging, help them build positive connections and affirm their choice in attending Saint Louis University.
  • Provide students time to learn about academic advising, degree requirements, student success resources, and establish a course schedule for the fall semester.
  • Empower students with the ability to navigate and connect with the physical environment of the campus and identify campus resources.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in reflection and dialogue about values, transition, expectations and identity to assist in building an inclusive community.

Outcomes of the SLU 101 Program

Students will ...

  • Identify the basic principles of the University mission.
  • Describe their understanding of their academic requirements and expectations.
  • Identify campus resources that are available to help them in their transition (social or academic).
  • Name two ways they can become involved on campus.
  • Establish a connection with one or more other students.

Parents/guardians/families will …

  • Identify the basic principles of the University mission.
  • Identify the campus resources and services available to them and their student.
  • Develop a connection to the SLU community through interacting with fellow guests, faculty and staff and student leaders.
  • Explore their shifting role as a parent or guardian and how this relates to communicating with their student, student privacy and family dynamics.
